Backworth I (198/2) v Morpeth I (194/5) Northumberland & Tyneside Senior League, Division A2

Despite some good performances with the bat, Morpeth firsts lost their third game of the league season.

The home side won the toss and elected to field. Following a few early wickets, James Sander (28) and Stefan Thomson put together a decent partnership.

Thomson was later joined by James Craigs, who scored a useful 39. Thomson finished on 72 not out, his innings included eight fours and one six, and Adam Lawn was 10 not out as Morpeth ended up scoring 194/5.

In reply, Duncan was caught by Rick Jones off the bowling of Lawn for 13, but excellent knocks by Spiller (111 not out) and Collins (58) helped to take Backworth to their victory target. Collins was bowled by Callum Urwin.

Morpeth’s second XI batted first at home against their Backworth counterparts and they were all out for 168. Benjamin Jones (72) hit some impressive attacking shots and opener Doug Turnbull (30) also played well.

The visitors got off to a strong start through Charlton (48), Carr (36) and Shannon (33), but once they were dismissed, a middle-order collapse put the game in the balance.

However, Race (28 not out) and Black (three not out) saw Backworth II home by three wickets. John Douglas (three for 29) and Matthew Dodds (two for 25) were the pick of Morpeth’s bowlers.

• To mark the official opening of Morpeth Cricket Club’s new square and outfields – the whole of the playing surface at the Longhirst sports field was re-laid in 2014 to improve drainage and add three new strips to the square – an open day for families, players and spectators will take place on Sunday.

A festival of cricket, which starts after the opening at noon, will involve an adult and junior competition of small-sided games to find the Morpeth CC team of the year.

There will also be cricket-themed fair games and challenges, a barbecue, entertainment and bar.
