Ferocious display sees off Morpeth

Annfield Plain v Morpeth Northumberland & Tyneside Senior League, Division A1

MORPETH made a game of it, but ultimately their total was not enough up against some ferocious Annfield Plain batting.

The visitors got off to a bad start when James Sander was caught for seven.

And although Sandy Meikle (21) and Jonny Craigs (15) played themselves in, they were frustratingly both trapped lbw to put Morpeth on the back foot. They were in deep trouble at 85-5 following the departures of Ben Maxted for 27 and James Craigs for a duck.

But an excellent partnership between Charles Anderson and Nick Forster turned things around.

They were initially solid then later played some glorious strokes to give the away side a fighting chance.

Morpeth finished on 227 for five from their 50 overs. Anderson hit seven fours and one six in his innings of 78 not out and Forster (67 not out) scored seven fours.

They got an early boost in the home side’s reply when Philip Shield was run out for ten.

Annfield Plain then got going and reached 50, but another twist came soon after as Andrew Donnelly was caught by Maxted off the bowling of Gary Christie.

However, the 96-run partnership between Neil Killeen and Sam Stephenson (61) put the County Durham side in the driving seat.

Killeen went on to score 96, hitting 12 fours and three sixes in the process. With support from Michael Allen (37 not out) they comfortably reached their target to win by six wickets.

Jonny Craigs and Paul Elliott were the other Morpeth wicket takers.
