Four-run victory earns seconds the silverware

Lanchester II (134-7) v Ponteland II (138-5) Northumberland & Tyneside Senior League Go North East B Division League Cup Final

Ponteland seconds held their nerve to win their division trophy away to Lanchester II on Sunday.

The home side won the toss and elected to field. Pont made a decent total (138 for five) in their 20 overs.

Top scorers in the innings were Common (34), Gardner (32 not out) and Gerrard (22).

Lanchester lost early wickets, but they recovered well and the match went down to the final over. However, it was the visitors that came out on top by four runs.

Gardner also did well with the ball as he had figures of 3-39. Smart claimed two scalps and McGregor and Edmondson picked up a wicket each.

This was Ponteland’s first second XI cup final win since 1978.

The first team lost by seven wickets at home to Ashington I on Saturday.

Pont won the toss and batted first and after Ed Common was out for six, they were in a decent position thanks to Anthony Quarrell (69) and Tom Seymour (29).

However, Dan Wright (15) was the only other player to reach double figures as the hosts scored 114 for eight in their 50 overs.

The visitors scored at a quick pace and were soon in a comfortable position.

There was a little bit of hope for Ponteland when Liam Cosgrove and Seymour dismissed the opening batsmen, but Ashington continued to play aggressively and they reached their victory target for the loss of just one further wicket, which was taken by David Waters.
