THE Morpeth-based SGR Racing team and rider Jason Vernon travelled to the Cheshire circuit of Oulton Park for the seventh round of the British Monster Energy Motostar Championship.
The weekend started off well, with Jason running within the top ten for most of the first free practice session in the wet. He only slipped down the order when the track dried and some riders went out on slick tyres for the final few minutes.
Second free practice saw a dry track and Jason set a personal best lap time by three seconds. The team, like many others in the 125GP paddock, were struggling with engine problems and were extremely grateful to Gary from Motorcycle Compensation Group for picking up parts early on Saturday morning to enable the team to push as much as possible for the remainder of the weekend.
A very difficult qualifying ensued on the Saturday and Jason ended up in 22nd position on the grid. The team knew improvements could be made for race day and with the hard work of Nick from KAIS Ohlins, Jason found good feel for the bike in warm-up and ended the session 16th fastest overall.
The team were very confident that they would be battling for points in the race. Jason made a good start and began to pass other riders on the first couple of corners, when unfortunately he ran a little wide while trying to make a pass going into Island bend.
He hit the grass and tried his best to keep the bike upright until the last moment, when he had to lay the bike down before running into the tyre wall. Jason suffered a minor hand injury in the crash, but should be fit to ride at the next round at Cadwell Park this weekend.
