Hexham Leazes II (190-7) v Mitford II (193-3) West Tyne Senior League, Division Two
MITFORD seconds faced the daunting task of taking on last season’s runners-up in the form of Hexham Leases in the opening fixture of the season.
The hosts got off to a solid start, not helped by some indifferent early bowling and a couple of dropped catches, but the Mitford cause was helped by a couple of easy run-outs and an excellent catch from keeper Gaynor.
Vipura had caused some concern to the batsmen with some fine spin bowling and he took a deserved three wickets, then an excellent last ten overs from the bowlers meant that only 20 or so runs were added and the innings ended on 190 for seven.
In reply, once he played himself in, Ellinor got into his stride and began to dominate the opening partnership, dispatching the ball to the boundary with efficiency and aggression when required.
He was eventually dismissed for 68 and some great attacking play by Dunn, who scored 54, put the visitors in a strong position.
Any slight hope Leazes thought they had was extinguished when Vipura (18 not out), well supported by Wigham (21 not out), came to the crease and hit a series of boundaries – culminating with an impressive six to end the game at 193 for three.
