Honours even after thirds’ trip to the coast

Whitley Bay/Tynemouth III 2 Morpeth III 2

Morpeth Hockey Club’s men’s thirds made the short trip to Tynemouth on the back of a good win and three strong team performances.

The game started slowly, both teams easing their way in as they did not want to lose any ground.

Morpeth started to pressure the home side more and more – getting forward whenever possible. It was however, Whitley Bay and Tynemouth that broke the deadlock when a home player ran into the opposition’s D and slotted the ball home.

The visitors started to press the opposition and it was Finlay Pearce who broke the hosts down.

He ran along the wing at pace before cutting in and slotting the ball across goal for Darryn Stephens to put score. This made it 1-1 at half time.

The second half started much the same as the first and again it was Whitley Bay and Tynemouth that took the lead when a former Morpeth player managed to somehow put the ball into the goal.

Pushing for the equaliser, the Longhirst-based outfit tweaked their formation to play a midfield three of Jones, Palmer and Mellor. This allowed them to push higher up the pitch and they won a series of short corners.

With the final whistle blown, Morpeth had one chance left from the final short corner and that was all they needed as Ian Foster put the ball into the goal, causing scenes of jubilation from the men in green and gold.
