A MORPETH-BASED athlete did himself proud at a national competition.
Heavy downpours meant a delayed start to the English Schools’ Track and Field Championships at Gateshead International Stadium on Friday but this proved useful to Joe Robertshaw, running for Northumberland, who qualified second fastest in the three heats of the Intermediate Boys 400m.
He recorded a lifetime best performance of 48.88 seconds, improving his UK ranking from ninth to third into the bargain.
In the final, held on Saturday in front of a packed stadium, Joe just lost out on a podium place by coming fourth in a time of 49.45 seconds, with Gold going to Nicolas Petrou of North Yorkshire (48.53), Silver to Dereece O’Callaghan of Bedfordshire (48.90) and Bronze to Ben Snaith of Cambridgeshire (48.95).
He came into the race in good form, having won the Northumberland Schools and North East Counties 400m titles earlier in the year.
