Morpeth Ladies I 3 Longridge Ladies I 2
MORPETH Hockey Club’s ladies first team put in an excellent performance to defeat the league leaders.
The home side started well, with good link-up play on the right-hand side between Smith, Bowler and O’Mahoney causing problems early on. But an interception in the middle of Morpeth’s half allowed Longridge to attack at pace and the visitors’ centre forward showed great skill to weave her way through the defence before slipping the ball past the Morpeth keeper, Rose.
Morpeth came back strongly and got a deserved equaliser from some good two-touch passing between Bell and Wilson at the top of the circle, with Wilson showing great skill to chip her shot high over the Longridge keeper and into the net.
They went 2-1 ahead when, having beaten two defenders along the baseline, Pollock played a timely pass into the top of the circle that deflected off Bowler’s stick towards goal, where Telford-Cooke had positioned herself well at the far post to sweep the ball into the backboard.
But it wasn’t long before Longridge responded and just before the half-time whistle they were awarded a short corner. It was a well-worked routine with a disguised sweep from the top of the circle and a deflection into goal that brought the scores level.
The winning goal came in the second half, when Cully’s skilful play along the baseline got the hosts a short corner.
With Morpeth’s stick stopper out of action, Bell took the responsibility of stopping a fast ball out from Smith and she struck a perfect shot into the bottom left-hand corner which left the keeper with no chance.
The remaining 20 minutes of the game was intense, but Morpeth held on for the victory. Rose was brought into action of a number of occasions, making some great saves following a barrage of short corners.
