THERE was a great turnout from Morpeth Amateur Swimming Club at the annual Sunderland Summer Splash gala, with 13 swimmers competing.
Many of the group had recently attended a weekend training camp at Stirling University and were taking the opportunity to put into practice the skills they had learned swimming in a 50 metre pool.
It was a successful event for the club, as a total of 20 medals were won by Morpeth swimmers.
Gold medallists included Ethan Howe (12-year-old boys, 50m backstroke) and Lauren Howe (12-year-old girls, 100m freestyle).
In one of the final events of the weekend, Morpeth had two teams in the 9-12 years 4x100m medley relay. Both teams swam incredibly well.
The first leg got off to a great start with Lauren Howe (backstroke) setting the pace for Morpeth A team, gaining an impressive lead over the other clubs.
Jessica Watson went on to increase the lead further in the breaststroke, with Hannah Seymour and Kate Seymour holding onto this advantage in the following two legs to beat eight other teams (including Sunderland’s A team) by a total of nine seconds and take gold.
The Morpeth B team finished the race in seventh position.
