IT has been full steam ahead for Morpeth Swimming Club’s Olympic fund-raising drive.
Members did the equivalent distance from Morpeth to the Olympic Park in London in just under 13 hours during a combination of the special launch event and training sessions.
Sponsorship money is being collected and will help fund the club’s nine Young Games Makers, who start their volunteering at the Games in a few weeks.
This will add to the donations while the Olympic Torch Relay was coming through Morpeth and grants from Morpeth Town Council, Northumberland County Council’s Community Chest scheme, the High Sheriff of Northumberland, Foundation Governors at King Edward VI School, Morpeth Lions Club and the Northumberland Swimming Action Group.
Club Chairman Lynda Garland said: “Everyone was surprised to complete the challenge ahead of schedule, but this showed how much all our swimmers got into the challenge as they put in a lot of effort. We’re delighted that we have received so much support from organisations and residents for all our fund-raising activities over the last few months.”
