A PONTELAND gymnast has won a silver medal at a prestigious competition which attracts some of the sport’s hottest stars.

Michael Gill, 15, got his hands on the gong at the recent European Gymnastics Acrobatic Championships in Portugal.

The youngster was part of a quartet from Durham’s Deerness Gymnastics Academy that came second in the 11-16 age men’s four contest.

The other members were Finn Gavin, 11, from Alnwick, as well as Nathan Brady, 15, and Stuart Napier, 14, both from Durham.

A total of 10 Deerness gymnasts competed at the championships and they all won silver medals.

The group, including Michael, are British champions and they are coached by Stuart Thompson and Karl Wharton.
