Ponteland (136) v Ryton (138-1) Northumberland & Tyneside Senior League, Division A1
PONTELAND slumped to a disappointing nine-wicket defeat against a team below them in the table.
They batted first and were really up against it at 15-4 when Wayne Ritzema, Dan Wright, Jonathan Appleby and James Ritzema were all dismissed cheaply.
Anthony Quarrell helped to start a partial recovery with a knock of 15 and then a useful partnership between Stuart Taylor and Ed Common gave Pont a slight chance of victory.
Taylor scored an excellent 59 off 92 balls. His innings included seven fours and one six. Common was looking good for his half-century until he was caught when on 38.
Tom Common made 11, but no one else made double figures and Ponteland were all out for just 136.
Badenhorst and Wood were in good form for Ryton and the result was never in doubt once they played themselves in, although Wood was trapped LBW by Quarrell for 44.
The visitors reached their target with more than 25 overs to spare. Badenhorst was 75 not out.
There was better news for the seconds in Division B1 as they beat Ashington II by nine wickets.
The hosts were dismissed for just 103 with Pont spinners Andy Denyer and Ian Smart both claiming four wickets. In reply, the away side’s openers were close to a 10-wicket win with Matt Darwood dismissed for 44 and Rory Marr unbeaten on 40 – Parag Chauhan finished on two not out.
The B1 title now stands just 19 points away and it could be clinched on Saturday at home to Consett II. The game starts at 1pm.
