A group of eight to 12-year-old swimmers from Morpeth ASC (pictured right) competed in the final heat of the Northumberland and Durham Junior League.

The team had already competed successfully in two previous heats and their performance at Freeman’s Quay in Durham confirmed their place in the final.

Highlights of the meet included nine-year-old Kiera Peck winning the breaststroke, Niamh Atchison and Dominic Anderson also coming first in their respective 12-year-old breaststroke events. Niamh also came first in the backstroke and Sam Tate put in a fine performance to win his 12-year-old freestyle event. Swimmers who finished in second place included Richard Butterworth (12 Butterfly), and Kate Kennedy in three events (backstroke, freestyle and butterfly).

In the relay events, the 12-year-old boys’ team swam a magnificent race to win half a length ahead of the field. The team comprised Ciaran Leahy, Dominic Marshall, Richard Butterworth and Sam Tate. The 12-year-old boys’ medley team finished second in their event (Richard Butterworth, Joe Yates, Danny Henderson and Sam Tate).

In the girls’ nine medley Ellie Henderson, Keira Peck, Kate Kennedy and Rachel Williams finished in second place.
