MORPETH Swimming Club President Peter Rushworth has won a national accolade.

The 81-year-old was victorious in the Long Service Award category of the ASA Aquaforce Volunteering Awards.

He has been involved in the sport for more than 60 years and he was appointed as head coach and secretary when Morpeth ASC was formed in March 1969.

Mr Rushworth was head coach until the club appointed its first professional coach in 1996, and still takes sessions today. He also arranges an annual competition with Portobello Swimming Club in Scotland.

“I have many great memories of my career, including the development of a national champion when I was at Sunderland and North East and county champions at Morpeth, and I still enjoy coaching,” he said.

He will receive his accolade at the club’s awards night this weekend.
