Poor batting costs victory

Morpeth (101 all out) v Swalwell (194 all out) Northumberland and Tyneside Senior League, Division A1

MORPETH put up a decent showing with the ball against title-chasing Swalwell, but a poor batting performance cost them the chance of a shock victory.

The visitors started well until Anderson was bowled by Cooper for 15 and Hewison nicked a Rutherford delivery to wicketkeeper Maxted.

The Craigs brothers got in on the act with Jonny taking four wickets and James finishing with figures of 2-28, but Pattison proved hard to dislodge and he made 72 in what turned out to be the crucial innings of the match. Swalwell were bowled out for 194.

In reply, the hosts’ openers played themselves in and looked to be set for decent scores until Jonny Craigs was trapped LBW for 22 and Wailes was bowled on 10.

Rutherford continued his good form and he played some fine attacking shots in his innings of 38 not out. But wickets fell all around as no-one else could get into double figures and Morpeth were dismissed for just 101.
