Morpeth and its surroundings will be the venue for an international-class athletics and cycling sporting event that could see some of the competitors on their way to this year’s world championships.
The 2014 Morpeth Duathlon takes place on Sunday morning from 10am, with more than 500 competitors expected to take part.
For the second successive year the race organisers, V02Max Racing, have had the sprint race classed as a qualifying event for the 2014 ITU World Championships that are being held at the end of May in Pontevedra, Spain.
Competitors first race through closed streets and the town’s Carlisle Park on a multi-lap course. They then head out on a cycle ride that will take them out to the neighbouring countryside through Pigdon and Netherwitton before heading back into Morpeth via Mitford.
The event concludes with a final run through the town. Once again, the duathlon is being supported by the Morpeth Town Team and Northumberland County Council.
Bridge Street, Newgate Street, Oldgate and Newmarket will be closed between 9am and 2pm.
