A Year 9 student at Ponteland High School is making wheely good progress in the sport of cycling.

Sophie Enever won the Highfield Kitchens Spring Shield Series in March, then in the Youth Tour of Scotland she finished 18th overall in the General Classification with a number of good rides.

She was 13th at the first National Race of the season at Hetton le Hole following a bunch sprint with the best girls in the UK and she recently took part in the Youth Tour of the Isle of Man.

As a result of these rides, she will now enter the National Championship race in Essex at the beginning of July.

Ponteland High School headteacher Kieran McGrane said: “Sophie is a fantastic student as she has managed all of this and maintains an excellent academic record.”
