A HEPSCOTT teenage netball player is heading for sunnier climes to be put through her paces by top coaches.

Charlotte Keenan, 13, and 22 other pupils from Newcastle-based Westfield Independent School are heading to Praia de Vieira in Portugal for a week-long training camp.

Elite England coaches and the Scottish youth team coach will spend time with the girls to help them improve their skills.

Westfield is among the first to commit to the camp, but it is hoped the squads will be training alongside and playing against a broad range of schools from across the UK and Europe.

The week is not limited to a gruelling training schedule, but is also being used as a chance for the girls to experience other activities first hand.

Nicky Bolton, Physical Education teacher at the school, said: “This was an opportunity that suited our needs perfectly.

“The team are very young but we nurture experiences from an early age.

“They will benefit hugely from this trip, not only in terms of their netball skills but also their overall life experiences and confidence.

“We want the girls to make the most of their time in Portugal, so the trip is not restricted just to netball.

“We have carefully chosen an area and complex with a huge selection of sporting activities and facilities.

“We will spend a lot of time exploring the surrounding areas, and of course, having lots of fun in the process.”

This is the first time that Westfield’s junior netball squads have been taken abroad for such a unique experience.
