North Shields 2 Morpeth 1 North East Hockey League, Premier Division
MORPETH men’s first team travelled to North Shields in search of another three points to keep up their impressive start.
However, they knew this would be far from easy as previous encounters have always been very close with little to choose between the sides.
The game was very open from the start, both teams struggling to keep hold of the ball meaning chances early on.
Shields looked the more threatening with slick movement trying to catch the away side on the break. However, the Morpeth back-line dealt with any attacks with ease and keeper Jackson making some important saves when called upon.
With a goalless first half looking inevitable, Morpeth shot themselves in the foot by giving the ball away, allowing Shields to counter and take the lead on the stroke of half-time.
Morpeth came out in the second half knowing they would have to up their game if they were to get anything from it.
Again they created some clear opportunities, with Brown, Dixon, Valentine and Danecki all going close to scoring.
They looked to be getting a strong hold on the game when before they knew it they were caught on the break once again and much to their dismay conceded a second.
The final 15 minutes saw Morpeth produce their best hockey of the game, and from it they managed to get a goal back, Fairbrother hammering the ball to Brown in the ‘D’, who in turn deflected to McPate on the back post for him to fire home.
