Twos’ victory is sweet

Leadgate II v Ponteland II Northumberland & Tyneside Senior League, Division B2

PONTELAND came out on top in a see-saw encounter at Leadgate.

The home side were in the mood to score quickly and hit 80 off the first ten overs, with David Richardson, in particular, playing some cracking shots.

But after David Walker was out for 18, caught by Andrew Morgan off the bowling of John Gardner, wickets fell at regular intervals.

Richardson was still a problem and looked set for a century until he found Richard Moller from a Jack Schofield delivery to fall for 75 runs.

Luke McCabe (11) and John Peacock (12) briefly threatened to make significant scores but McCabe nicked a Mark Waters ball to Pont wicketkeeper Chris Morgan and Peacock was bowled by Gardner.

Leadgate were all out for just 146, with Schofield (four for 50), Gardner (three for 55) and Waters (two for 14) the Ponteland wicket-takers.

The visitors’ reply got off to a solid start under Matty Bell (21) and Andy Graves (28).

Parag Chauhan then came in and scored 20, which was a useful score in the circumstances, but Leadgate’s Richardson was also doing some damage with the ball and bowling both Graves and Chauhan gave his side a chance.

A big batting collapse put the game back in the balance as Pont were seven wickets down and still needed more than 20 runs to win.

But Morgan (16 not out) and Schofield (15 not out) managed to play themselves in and they calmly saw the team to a maximum-point victory.
