Northumberland athlete Laura Weightman opens her European Championships account this morning.

The women’s 1500m qualifying round is scheduled to start at 9.35am (UK summer time) and the Commonwealth Games silver medallist, from Lesbury, has been named in the second heat.

In what is a strong-looking start list, the 23-year-old Morpeth Harrier will line up against the likes of fellow British runner Hannah England and Sifan Hassan, of the Netherlands.

Great Britain’s Laura Muir and Abeba Aregawi, of Sweden, are some of the names to look out for in the first heat.

The first four runners in each heat, as well as the next four fastest, go through to Friday’s final.

The heats are set to be shown on BBC Two.
