AT just eight years old, William Penketh has won the Swim School Scholarship Award at the Riverside Leisure Centre in Morpeth.

William, who has just completed the stage five class, has won a free term of swimming lessons and a Swim School goodie bag after being nominated for the award by his teacher.

The scholarship scheme is a new initiative that aims to reward the efforts of young people who have progressed exceptionally well during their swimming lessons.

Throughout the last school term, William demonstrated an outstanding attitude and willingness to learn. He is now able to achieve 25 metres in all swim strokes and can perform handstands, tucks, forward somersaults and a variety of other skill work.

Zelah Dickerson, Swim School Co-ordinator at Riverside Leisure Centre, said: “William really deserves this award. He has worked very hard this term and is so enthusiastic in every lesson. He always wants to learn and attacks every challenge, making him a stand-out pupil.”
