Young prospect makes his mark with the ball

Stocksfield (25-0) v Morpeth (103 all out) Northumberland & Tyneside Senior League, Division A2

This match on Saturday was abandoned due to rain at a time when Morpeth looked to be heading for defeat.

The visitors elected to bat after winning the toss. They were up against it when Rick Jones and James Sander were out for ducks.

Stefan Thomson (22) and John Turnbull (15) showed some resistance, but Morpeth kept losing wickets and were soon in deep trouble.

They found some stability in the form of James Craigs and he had useful support from lower order batsmen Kurran Dhugga (11) and Sam Hornby (10).

It looked to be too little, too late as the away side were all out for 103 – Craigs was left on 33 not out.

However, the rain arrived when Stocksfield were 25 without loss and no further play was possible.

Morpeth II batted first at home to their Stocksfield counterparts and openers Doug Turnbull and Ben Gascoigne scored 15 and 18 respectively.

There were some fairly decent knocks in the middle order from S. Lakey (27), Rory McNally (20), Elliott Clark (17) and Benjamin Jones (17) as the hosts were all out for 147.

Although Stocksfield II lost opener Catnach cheaply (run out), they looked well set when Tyrrell (41) and Doneathy (33) played themselves in, however, they were both dismissed off the bowling of youngster Clark.

He took four wickets in total, John Douglas picked up a couple and Stephen Parsons got one, but the visitors held their nerve to reach their victory target with two wickets to spare.
