Morpeth 23 Northern 6 North One East

THIS was a crucial game for Morpeth and they were not to be found wanting, writes Tom Green.

The pitch was heavy after overnight rain but the game was played in good conditions.

It was Northern who started well and it was the boot of former Morpeth player Andy Sutherland who opened the scoring with a penalty after 15 minutes.

This was cancelled out by a Jinks penalty after good work from Reynolds and Mooney, but Northern re-took the lead with a further penalty after Morpeth had struggled to win their own line-out – a problem that they had throughout the first half.

But Jinks made the scores level at the start of the second half. An excellent Reynolds kick and chase by Lynn saw Jinks put over another penalty.

It was now all Morpeth with Duggan making incisive breaks and the front row of Ramsay, Charlton and Carmichael dominating their opponents.

The hosts sealed victory with two tries from flanker Bell, who scavenged on spilled opposition ball after pressure had been applied to a tiring Northern side.

Both tries were converted to make the final score 23-6.
