Ponteland 9 Alnwick 19 Durham & Northumberland Division One
PONTELAND gave high-flying Alnwick a decent game, but their inability to score a try proved crucial.
The home side were dominant early on but could not find a way through against a determined visiting defence.
Back came Alnwick and they took the lead with a penalty from Bird. This was followed by an excellent run from Pont’s Will Newbigin, who brought back a long kick at pace into the opposition 22, however the move broke down before the scoring touch could be applied.
They were made to pay when the away side went 10-0 in front.
Following a short passing move, Oliver crashed over for a try and Bird added the conversion.
Ponteland were not done yet and sustained pressure brought them three points when Michael Mullins kicked over a penalty.
He was soon successful with another, but the away side increased the gap with two of their own (6-16).
There was hope for the home side in the latter stages of the game when Alnwick were caught handling at the ruck and Mullins slotted over a long-range penalty.
But the final body blow came when they were caught offside and words to the referee moved the penalty-kick forward 10 metres.
Bird was successful to make the final score 9-19.
