A GROUP of Morpeth rugby players have been a fund-raising hit.
Stag Francais was formed from members of the Morpeth Stags squad to take part in the Longhirst Hall Sevens in aid of Help for Heroes.
They received £120 from bucket collections on the day, but many other donations have been made after the event and the total is now more than £800, with more money to come.
One of the players, Morpeth town councillor Dave Herne, said: “The response has been fantastic and some of those who have given their money have been asking their friends and work colleagues to support us.
“We’re very grateful to all those who have given donations, including the Morpeth and Wansbeck Conservatives which handed over more than £100 and the Morpeth RAFA Club for allowing us to collect money on its premises.
“Three of the team, including myself, are ex-servicemen and so the charity means a lot to us.”
He also thanked Logos Unlimited for putting the Help for Heroes motif on the back on their shirts for no charge.
