Morpeth U15 39 Berwick U15 7

TWO tries from flying winger Reece Jones sealed an impressive away win for Morpeth RFC U15s at Berwick upon Tweed last Sunday.

There was no lethargy in the Morpeth team’s legs, or performance, after taking the road north where they built on their previous week’s win, leading almost from the kick-off to run out 39-7 winners against a decent Berwick side.

The Mitford Road youngsters hit their stride quickly in chilly, but good, playing conditions to take an early lead through flanker Lewis Nicholson, who went over following a quick tap-and-go move.

A well-taken solo effort then saw fly-half Sam Eyres dummy the Berwick backs before going in for a try under the posts to extend the Morpeth lead to 12-0.

Reece Jones then collected the first of a brace of tries as quick inter-passing and some well-worked forward play saw him take his chance to go over in the corner.

Morpeth were never threatened in a match which they dominated throughout, despite Berwick going over for a try and conversion late in the first half.

Turning around with the wind and slope to their advantage, Morpeth kept the scoreboard ticking over through tries from forwards Sam Fieldsen, Joe Turnbull and Johnny Waters, the latter’s power and aggression saw him crash over with several Berwick players trailing in his wake.

Reece Jones then collected the second of his tries in the final few minutes of the match to seal his contribution to a fast-paced, competitive and good all round team performance from Morpeth.

Sam Eyres added to the try tally with two well-taken conversions.
