Youngsters complete double over rivals

Morpeth RFC U15s 21 Alnwick RFC U15s 17

MORPETH continued the New Year in winning style after seeing off a strong Alnwick side in a highly-entertaining encounter in the Mitford Road mud on Sunday.

Tries from Nathan Howey, Josh White and Jacob Crooks were enough to see the home side through in a match notable for strong tackling, good handling and big hits by both sides. The victory meant they completed the double over their county rivals.

Despite going behind after an early score for the visitors, Morpeth heads never dropped in the finger-numbing cold and driving rain as they fought their way back to take the lead mid-way through the first half – a lead they never looked like surrendering.

The second half saw the hosts step up a gear to ply more pressure on the Alnwick line through some excellent close quarter forward play and tactical kicking from stand-in fly-half and man-of-the-match Jake Stephenson (who also kicked two conversions).

A late rally by Alnwick, which led to last minute try, was never going to be enough to beat a Morpeth side who now turn their attention to some tough games over the coming weeks, including a visit to Novos.
