Ponteland RFC U15s 19 Morpeth RFC U15s 47
IT was double delight for second row Sam Fieldson as Morpeth U15s kicked off the new year with a well-earned victory over local rivals Ponteland.
His two tries were the highlight of a good performance from the Mitford Road youngsters in the finger-numbing cold conditions on Sunday.
An opening score saw prop Johnny Waters crash over with the majority of the Morpeth forwards in support. Fieldson then got the first of his brace to propel the visitors into an early two-try lead before the hosts hit back late in the first half with two well-deserved tries.
However, it was never going to be enough to unsettle a strong, resilient and fired-up Morpeth side who finally found their stride early in the second half and didn’t look back following further tries from second row Joe Turnbull and winger Isaac Hall.
It was left to the ever-dependable Will Allen, playing at fly-half after switching from scrum-half, to score the try-of-the-match – a well-taken kick-and-chase which saw him outpace three opposition backs in the race for the ball as he touched down in the corner.
Hooker and captain Michael Chattaway rounded off a fine display for Morpeth with the last try of the game following some deft handling and good lines of running.
Sam Eyres had his best performance of the season with the boot, scoring six out of seven conversions despite it being slippery underfoot.
