A passion for heritage

A PASSION for heritage has been seen across the North East.

New figures from Heritage Counts show that 75 per cent of adults in the region visited a heritage site in 2011/12, the highest level since official statistics were first collected in 2006.

The report also found that the region’s volunteer force is twice the national average, with National Trust helpers in the North East and Yorkshire increasing by 14 per cent, compared to seven per cent nationally.

However, the North East continues to have the highest percentage of Grade I and Grade II buildings at risk.
