PUPILS have been given the power to choose some new reading material for Ponteland Library.
In an innovative scheme, Northumberland County Council allocated a sum of money for Year 8 students at Richard Coates Middle School to spend on 25 new books that they wanted on the shelves.
Val Tyler, policy board member for community infrastructure and culture, said: “We want to involve young people as much as possible so that the books in our libraries are books that they enjoy and can help with their studies.
“The idea of letting them choose books for their peers has been extremely successful and we will be using their suggestions to buy young adult books for other libraries in Northumberland.”
School librarian Gillian Haxell said the pupils are keen to read the new titles, including Coco Caramel by Cathy Cassidy.
