Christmas shoppers remember the past

CHRISTMAS shoppers can take time out to stroll down memory lane at a pop up Morpeth heritage event.

Morpeth Antiquarian Society has been displaying old adverts and photographs of the town in an empty shop in Oldgate since Heritage Open Days in September.

But now the display at the former Grey Bull and Reeds Rains estate agency building will be extended to include old Christmas adverts from the Morpeth Herald more than 100 years ago.

And for the next two Wednesdays there will be the chance to call into the shop and chat to some of the antiquarians’ museum volunteers.

People can find out more about the stories behind the displays, learn about the work being carried out by the antiquarians at the museum store in Newbiggin and discuss ideas for a future heritage resource in Morpeth.

Books and other items will be for sale alongside a tombola to help with fund-raising for the museum store rental fees. Donated items for the tombola should be taken in advance to Rickard’s office in Newgate Street.

The antiquarians are also hoping that visitors will be able to answer queries they have about the town, and there is a request for information, pictures and other items for two major projects they are planning in the next two years.

The Women of Morpeth project will take place next year to commemorate the centenary of the death of Suffragette Emily Davison. Information about the daily life of women in the town 100 years ago would be of interest, as well as details of other notable women from Morpeth’s past.

The second project will mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War and the antiquarian society is interested in finding out more about the people named on the town’s war memorials, as well as any family members who returned from the war.

Anyone with information can call into the shop at 1-3 Oldgate, near the Clock Tower, on Wednesday, December 12 or 19. Alternatively, call 01670 790084, or email morpethmemories@gmail.com
