Flying the flag for Commonwealth Day

Waiting for Video...

A CELEBRATION of Commonwealth Day has taken place in Northumberland this morning.

People gathered at County Hall in Morpeth at 10am to show their appreciation of the Commonwealth and its values in the first such event of its kind.

A Commonwealth flag was raised at the county council headquarters by pupils from James Calvert Spence College in Amble, and a special Commonwealth Affirmation and message from the Queen was read.

Similar events took place in 500 communities across the UK, Channel Island and Isle of Man.

It was the first time that local authorities, civic dignitaries, community groups and charities throughout the British Isles have joined together in such a ceremony.
