ONE of Northumberland’s top tourist venues has been recognised as among the finest in the country.
Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens, which is run by English Heritage, has come second in the first BBC Countryfile Magazine Awards for Britain’s Finest Garden.
The awards, which also saw the Northern England Red Squirrel scheme named Conservation Project of the Year, were launched in the national magazine in April.
Experts compiled a shortlist of candidates and readers of the magazine then voted for their favourites.
Other winners were Alnwick as Best Market Town, and the Hadrian’s Wall path as the Greatest Walking Trail.
Northumberland Tourism Chief Executive Giles Ingram said: “We believe that our countryside, wildlife and attractions are the best in Britain and it’s great to get further endorsement from the public and Countryfile Magazine readers.”
