The Waterstones’ Book Club continues with more favourite reads recommended by staff at the Morpeth book shop.

Paul is reading: The Narrow Road To The Deep North, by Richard Flanagan.

Beautifully written and utterly compelling, this Booker prize-winning novel deals with love, loss and war.

It is both epic, telling of a PoW enduring the infamous Burma railway, but also intensely personal, as the central character battles both with his inner conscience and his duty to save his fellow soldiers.

By turns hard-hitting and then surprisingly uplifting, once you read it you won’t forget it.

Connie loves: Blown Away, by Rob Biddulph.

This has won Waterstones’ Children’s Book of the Year award and deservedly so.

It all starts with a windy day. ‘A windy day. A brand new kite. For Penguin Blue a maiden flight. The kite so high. The wind so strong. It’s pulling Penguin Blue along. Save me Penguins Jeff and Flo.’

An exciting, exhilarating adventure with fabulous illustrations. Connie reckons Jeff is the rockhopper!

Jo wants to read: Flash Boys, by Michael Lewis.

Flash Boys is another must-read title, which gives us an insight into the hidden world of high frequency trading.

Michael Lewis tells the outrageous story of the multi-millionaires who scammed the banking system in the blink of an eye.

A must for fans of Owen Jones’ The Establishment.
