GREEN-fingered youngsters can show their flower power in an art competition.
Heighley Gate Nursery and Garden Centre near Morpeth is urging children aged between four and 11 to take part in its flower drawing contest.
It is being linked with the centre’s Orchid Weekend on Saturday and Sunday.
General Manager Roger Wale said: “We would like children to create a picture of their favourite flower on an A4 piece of paper. We’re hoping to see lots of wonderful drawings.”
There are two age categories for the competition, four to seven-year-olds and eight to 11-year-olds. The winners will get a Let’s Grow windowsill greenhouse, two packets of sunflower seeds and one ten-litre bag of John Innes Seed Sowing Compost.
The runners-up will receive a certificate, two packets of sunflower seeds, ten Let’s Grow half seed trays and one ten-litre bag of John Innes Seed Sowing Compost.
The closing date for entries is 4.30pm on Friday, March 16. The flower drawings will then go on display at the garden centre until Friday, March 23.
The free orchid festival this weekend will be attended by members of the North East Orchid Society, who will offer visitors advice on caring for the plants.
There will be 12 varieties on display, which will be in place until Mothers’ Day, and free orchid care leaflets will be available for customers, while stocks last.
Mr Wale said: “The weekend is designed to give people interested in orchids an introduction to the plant. Everyone is welcome.”
