High standards at Longhirst Show

There were some new faces at the traditional Longhirst Show at the weekend, but there was no change in the high standards of entries.

The show dates back to 1915 when it was started by the Joicey family of Longhirst Hall, and there seems to be no evidence of interest waning in the various classes.

There was hot competition between Chairman Bob Jackson and Secretary Gill Featonby in many of the classes, and a fiercely fought Battle of the Vegetables ended in a tie, with the secretary taking the leek trophy and most leek classes, and the chairman claiming the trophy for Best Exhibit in the vegetable section with his stand of onions.

Mrs Featonby said: “Numbers of exhibitors and entries were down compared to previous years, with one of our main exhibitors being on holiday, but it was good to see some new names and faces in the prize list.

“The cookery judge Helen Moran was particularly impressed by the quality of bread in the show and the flavour of the winning loaf by Andy Cottiss, a new exhibitor to the show.”

Next year there will be special sections introduced to mark the show’s centenary, after which both Mr Jackson and Mrs Featonby will step down from their organisational roles.
