WANTED posters are going up around Morpeth to capture a lawless band of ruffians and outlaws.
The initiative has been launched by organisers of the Morpeth Northumbrian Gathering, who are looking for volunteers to step into the shoes of their lusty ancestors and take part in two re-enactments.
Residents are invited to march back in time to the days of the notorious Border Reivers and, with the help of re-enactment specialists Time Bandits, recreate the Wardens’s Day of Truce when the Reivers were tried for raids and cattle rustling, as well as the infamous Raid of Reidswire in 1575, a fierce battle.
Greater Morpeth Development Trust Heritage Officer Tamsin Lilley, who is helping to co-ordinate the event, said: “Anyone who fancies being a Border Reiver for the day will be welcome to join us and those volunteering to take part will be given help with clothing, equipment and arms.”
A recruitment event will take place in the Market Place on Saturday, from 11am to 1pm.
The re-enactments will take place on Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1.
