A band which will be celebrating nine decades of performing has won another competition.

This year marks the 90th anniversary of Ellington Colliery band.

And the senior band of the Morpeth-based group recently had a successful attempt at ‘Border Reivering’ by winning the Fife Open Contest.

Some of its members have been playing for more than 40 years.

The Senior and Brass Roots bands are working with other bands in south east Northumberland and composer Lucy Pankhurst, to perform a world premiere of some newly commissioned music for each of the bands at the Northumberland Miners’ Picnic at Woodhorn Colliery next month.

The band performs extensively locally in both concerts and contests and also supports local schools.

Based in the grounds of Morpeth’s Chantry Middle School, the band offers virtually free tuition and instruments to anyone interested in learning a brass instrument.

It is also keen to encourage new people to take up this offer.
