A GARDENING group which meets in Ponteland is staging two events this week.

The North East England Group of the Alpine Garden Society’s Autumn Show will take place on Saturday at Ponteland Memorial Hall, Darras Road.

The Nursery stalls will start selling at 10.30am and the show of Alpines, woodland plants, bulbs and small shrubs will open at noon. The show closes at 4pm, with home-made refreshments available all day.

Its next meeting will be held on Monday in St Mary’s Church Hall, Thornhill Road, from 7.30pm.

Guest speaker is Peter Cunnington who will be talking about Ranuculaceae — a genus of plants that include Buttercup, Anemone, Aquilegia, Pulsatilla and Clematis among others.

Mr Cunnington was Curator of the Ness Botanic Garden and has specialised in alpine flora. He is well travelled through Europe, Asia and America and has a considerable knowledge of alpines in the wild.

Entry to the Autumn Show is £2.50. Alpine Garden Society and Scottish Rock Garden Club members go free.

Visitors are welcome to attend the meeting at a charge of £2. For more information, telephone Terry Teal on 0191 4132574 or email t.teal@btinternet.com
