Leading the way in nursing progress

THE President of the Inner Wheel Club of Morpeth, Mrs June Hudspith, welcomed members to the first meeting in 2012 at the Queen’s Head Hotel, wishing them a happy and healthy year ahead.

After the meal, President June introduced our guest for the evening, the District Chairman Mrs Sandra Knowles. She visits all clubs in District 3 during her year of office.

Telling us something of herself, we learned that all her professional life was spent in nursing within the area of mental health.

Thirty years ago these vulnerable people had to endure locked wards and there was little to encourage them to think about their personal appearance. Mrs Knowles was at the vanguard of progress and was highly instrumental in improving conditions. She was asked to lecture students and then became Director of Nursing and Midwifery Education for Bede College.

Mrs Knowles’ charity for the year is Grace House, a children’s hospice in Sunderland, giving great and continuing support to children and their families at whatever age and throughout their need.

Mrs Iona Gott gave a very appreciative vote of thanks.

There followed the business meeting. Reports from representatives were given, the annual collection for LEPRA was taken and the President reminded us of coming events in 2012.
