TRIBUTES have been paid to a former Morpeth Herald worker who died earlier this year.

Raymond Smith, who lived in Stakeford and Ashington, joined the newspaper straight from school and worked as a typesetter.

He did a similar job at a newspaper in Reading and following his retirement, he moved to Australia with wife Freda, nee Browell, in 2003.

Mr Smith died in September at the age of 84 after a long illness. He leaves children Jenny, Jim and Trevor.

Nephew Eric Prytherch and his wife Eleanor said: “We were very close to Raymond and Freda and he will be missed by all his friends and family.

“When he lived and worked in Northumberland, he regularly played in the local snooker halls and his main hobby was model trains.”
