A VE Day message for clubs

BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL WOMEN

A letter was sent to BPW clubs locally following VE Day. BPW began in England just as the war broke out and clubs were formed all over the UK mainly due to the efforts of Nancy Anderson from Newcastle.

Suzanne Cordelier wrote: “England was the target of German airships. You built your clubs in the darkness of the blackout, among the ruins of your cities, under the bombs and whilst you — mothers and wives, daughters, sisters and sweethearts — were threatened in your best loves. But, as you continued imperturbably your business, among the sound of your guns, working for war and for victory, you extended your action and new clubs were born in your wounded towns as precious seeds, which could not wait for peace, and began to bloom among the ruins. V-Day brought us the end of our misery and you are ready to perform the new tasks of peace.”
