Activities give fund big boost

Staff at the Morpeth branch of Newcastle Building Society (NBS) have completed a 12-month fund-raising effort for a charity set up in memory of an Alnmouth man by handing over a cheque for £730.

The NBS team adopted The Stephen Carey Fund as their dedicated charity for 2015 and they carried out a range of activities at their Market Place office, including hamper raffles, cake sales and tombolas.

The money will now be put towards the purchase of a defibrillator in the Morpeth area, in line with the fund’s policy of keeping the money it receives in the communities where it was raised.

Branch manager Katie Wallace said: “As a mutual organisation, it’s important for us to give something back to the communities in which we operate and The Stephen Carey Fund is a local cause about which both our customers and our team are extremely passionate.

“We held all our events in the branch, which meant we had to adapt them to the relatively small space that we have available, but our customers supported all of them with real enthusiasm.”

The Stephen Carey Fund aims to improve the awareness of emergency first aid skills and enhance the provision of life-saving equipment throughout Northumberland.

It was named after 21 year-old Stephen Carey, who tragically collapsed and died from an undiagnosed heart defect whilst playing football for his village side in 2012.
