Alcan boosts high school youth initiative

Alcan Lynemouth has donated funds to a local initiative that aims to boost enterprise opportunities in Wansbeck.

Go Wansbeck - the Local Enterprise Growth Initiative (LEGI) – launched the Enterprise Opportunity Fund in 2007. To date the Fund has invested over 90,000 in local projects.

St Benet Biscop's RC High School in Bedlington is one of the organisations to benefit from grant support. It is seeking to develop a new business model that will demonstrate how schools can help launch, incubate and sustain business ideas created by pupils. The project aims to establish a new social enterprise or number of enterprises, and to increase entrepreneurial activity amongst young people.

Nick Bowen, Head Teacher, said: "We are delighted to receive this extra financial support through the Enterprise Opportunity Fund.

"This funding has enabled us to set up Benet Enterprises – a social enterprise project that takes young peoples business ideas and helps to turn them into a reality.

"We have recently taken over off site premises in Bedlington where pupils, staff and businesses can work together to help develop and nurture these ideas so that they become commercially viable ventures."

Wyn Jones, managing director of Alcan, said: "It is pleasing to know that Alcan's donation is being used to fund projects as innovative and inspiring as Benet Enterprises.

"Alcan has always been keen to support enterprise throughout the district and we are confident that through the Enterprise Opportunity Fund we can help stimulate business growth in Wansbeck and attract new businesses to the district."

Grants are available to community and voluntary organisations, educational establishments and groups of businesses working together who want to get an enterprise project off the ground. Eligible projects include those that aim to raise enterprise and new business starts, increase the competitiveness of existing businesses and attract new businesses to Wansbeck.

The Enterprise Opportunity Fund is supported by Alcan, Wansbeck District Council and the Go Wansbeck Local Economic Growth Initiative.
