Michael Quinn pictured collection vans from auctioneers Thomas N. Miller outside Morpeth institution John Smail and Sons when he was in the town on Saturday.

The hardware, furniture and household goods store, which closed last month, had stayed in the same family for four generations. It was known around the country and abroad.

Dozens of customers thanked proprietor John Young and others who worked at the business at the closing down sale.

The Morpeth and District Chamber of Trade wrote to the family to say how sorry members were that the store is no longer trading and thank them for the contribution they made to the town.
