AN overdue children’s library book has been returned — 33 years after it was checked out.
The mystery borrower posted the Mr Snow book back to Ponteland Library, with a letter of apology to staff.
The book was part of the popular Mister Men series by Roger Hargreaves and was due to be returned in 1979.
The borrower, who now lives in Berkshire, would have been five at the time and said his mother must have taken out the book when the family lived in Ponteland.
He found it during a recent clear-out of family belongings.
However, there will be no fine for the late return as the library’s computer records only date back to 2000 and there is no information about the original borrower.
Northumberland County Council Executive Member for Libraries Neil Bradbury said: “The book has been well cared for and we are pleased to see it back, even after this length of time. It is a case of better late than never.
“We do encourage customers to try to return their books promptly to allow other customers to share access to library stock. To make book renewal easier we now have a fantastic new website on which library members can conveniently renew items online.”
