A new report informs us that British officials have quietly abandoned the Government’s ‘cake and eat it’ Brexit deal.
They accept that there will be a painful trade-off between market access and political control if and when Britain leaves the EU.
This is different from the position of both main political parties, but civil servants are now presenting ministers with compromise positions, the report tells us.
It also said that Terry Scuoler, the Chief Executive of the Engineering Employers’ Federation, was to meet David Davis, Phil Hammond and Greg Clark.
“We are having a much more realistic conversation now,” Terry Scuoler is reported as saying.
He will warn them not to ‘set about ideologically dismantling the best free-trade agreement in the world’.
