Building that ‘doesn’t fit in’

CALLS have come for a town centre building to be made more sympathetic to the area.

A planning application has been submitted by British Telecom to remove glazing from first-floor windows at the Morpeth Telephone Exchange in Newgate Street and replace them with aluminium louvres to match the existing.

Morpeth Town Council will not object to the changes, but at a meeting of its Planning and Transport Committee members called for other improvements to be made.

Coun Mark Horton said: “It would be nice if BT could do something to the building to make it fit in a bit more.

“It is basically a big clump of metal sitting there and it doesn’t fit in.

“I would like BT to investigate ways of softening the overall visual aspect of the building so that it is more appropriate to the surrounding area and fits in with the street scene.”

His comments will be forwarded to Northumberland County Council, which will determine the application.
