Alpine Garden Society (NE)
MEMBERS of the public can join the North East England Group of the Alpine Garden Society, which meets in Ponteland, for a presentation about a group of South African plants.
Guest speaker Darren Sleep will give a talk on Cape Bulbs.
He is a biologist by training, but has worked for 20 years as an environmental chemist with the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, currently at its Lancaster University site. He made a visit to the Cape region of the country in 1999 and since then Mr Sleep has grown all sorts of Cape plants from seed.
Cape Bulbs is intended as an introduction to the main families of these plants and the talk will be illustrated with photographs of them both in habitat and in cultivation.
He will also give some growing advice. The meeting will take place on Monday in St Mary’s Church Hall, Thornhill Road, from 7.30pm. The charge for visitors is £2.50.
